Assignment 10

Write a final reflection about what you have learned about Ireland. Anything that will remain in your memory. It can be just a word or a type of food or explaining a fairytale character or story. This can be in bullet points. What are you taking from this class?

I really learned a lot in this class. Before I took this class all I knew about Ireland was that Irish has a British accent, but even that was wrong. It was shocking and so sad to know that Ireland had a hurtful history like Korea did. I really enjoyed watching movies and looking at pictures about Ireland. But Irish accent was so unique, so I had a bit of a hard time understanding what the actress and the actresses were saying. The movie I liked the most was Once. I never knew that the movie was took in Ireland. Even Ireland is always kind of wet and rainy, the atmosphere was so beautiful and the songs were so great. It was a movie that I could see the recent Ireland. I really enjoyed learning about Irish food also. I love potatoes so much so it was a joyful time learning about Irish food. I can't just wait to go to Itaewon for trying some Irish food. I really enjoyed the class when we made Sheperds pie. I will try it again by my self. I think having a chance to learn about a different country and a different culture is a great opportunity. At first, all I new about Ireland was, it is in Europe and it is close to England. But, know from learning in this class I learned so many good things and informations about Ireland. So when I meet an Irish person I will be so glad to talk about Ireland. Furthermore, I really want to visit and travel Ireland someday. Thanks to my lovely professor Sarah for a great class♥ XOXO

What can you tell me about these two Irish fairies:

When I was young I learned about leprechauns. But, the only thing I remember is that leprechauns wear green clothes and has orange hair and beard. I also remember that people can find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and leprechauns only know where the golds are. In the movie we saw in class, leprechauns were kind of mean. I thought they were cute but there were actually tricky and greedy. When a person finds a  leprechaun they can have the chance of making three wishes. Leprechaun makes the wishes come true by using there magic power, but as we know he is a tough character to deal with.

I never heard of banshee before so it was my first time seeing banshee through the movie. As I researched, I found out that banshee is a female ghost who is a women of death. In the movie, I saw banshee very shortly so I don't have many things to say. Banshee takes away peoples spirits by her carrige and she has her own sound WOO.

Assignment 3

What is the meaning behind the colors of the Irish flag?

The green pale in the flag symbolises Irish republicanism dating back to the Society of United Irishmen in the 1790s.

The orange represents the minority who were supporters of King William III, who was of the House of Orange and originally the Stadtholder of the Netherlands, had defeated King James II and his predominantly Irish Catholic army at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. His title came from the Principality of Orange in the south of France that had been a Protestant bastion from the 16th century. It was included in the Irish flag in an attempt to reconcile the Orange Order in Ireland with the Irish independence movement.

The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the two cultures and a living together in peace.

The flag, as a whole, is intended to symbolise the inclusion and hoped-for union of the people of different traditions on the island of Ireland, which is expressed in the Constitution as the entitlement of every person born in Ireland to be part of the independent Irish nation, regardless of ethnic origin, religion or political conviction.

Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark novel which perfected his stream of consciousness technique and combined nearly every literary device available in a modern re-telling of The Odyssey. Other major works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939), and his complete oeuvre includes three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters.
